On May 17, 1990, the General Assembly of the World Health Organization voted to eliminate homosexuality from the list of psychiatric diseases. In 1952, the American Psychiatric Association He had included it in his first Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In 1973, it was removed from its list of mental disorders. In 1975, the American Psychological Association took the same position, urging all health professionals to “take the initiative to remove the stigma of mental illness that has long been associated with homosexual orientations.”

What is the biblical position? The Seventh-day Adventist Church recognizes that every human being is valuable in the eyes of God, and seeks to minister to all humanity in the spirit of Jesus. We also believe that, by the grace of God and through the encouragement of the community of faith, a person can live in harmony with the DIVINE PRINCIPLES.

We believe that sexual intimacy is appropriate only within the heterosexual marital relationship, as intended by God at Creation. This heterosexual model is reaffirmed throughout Scripture. The Bible does not condone homosexual activities or relationships. Sexual acts outside of heterosexual marriage are prohibited (Lev. 18:5-23,26; Lev. 20:7-21; Rom. 1:24-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-11).

Jesus affirmed the dignity of all human beings and compassionately extended his hand to those who suffer the consequences of sin. He offered loving ministry and words of comfort to those who struggle, differentiating his love for sinners from his clear teachings about sinful practices. As disciples, we strive to follow the instruction and example of the Lord, living a life of faithfulness and compassion similar to his.

Just as an alcoholic does not stop being an alcoholic even if he remains abstemious for years, HOMOSEXUAL ATTRACTION IS NOT A SIN IN ITSELF,*but homosexual practice is condemned. So, THE HOLY SPIRIT gives power to remain sexually pure according to biblical principles, EVEN WHEN HOMOSEXUAL DESIRE ARE FELT.

There is power in the gospel to change people! Whether you yourself are experiencing struggles in this regard, or you know someone who has this inclination, let us remember that Jesus has the power to change people and make them happy.
