DNU REQUESTS CESSATION, INVESTMENT WEAPONS OF WAR (Cont.)

Earlier this week, it was claimed on social media that the General Conference has stakes in companies related to the gun industry through investment funds. The General Conference administers on behalf of various units within the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

For several years, several of the funds administered by the General Conference have had ownership interests in defense technology companies. This has been one element of a large management portfolio with investments in many industries.

Unknown to union leaders

The awareness of investment in defense technology surprises many union leaders outside the United States. The accounts of the General Conference are discussed at the board meeting in April of each year. At the board meeting, union leaders do not participate in unions outside of North America. They only attend the board meeting in October, the so-called Annual Council. However, the annual accounts and investment summary are available to Board members who wish to have these documents at the Annual Council.

During the San Antonio General Conference in 2015, Tom Angelsen, district leader in the North North District of the Adventist Church, raised questions about the ethical standards for the Church's capital investments. He specifically asked if the church renounced companies that could not be defended by our ethical guidelines. [You can see the report here ] (English). The then CFO of the General Conference, Robert Lemon, assured great ethical awareness and stated that every year, all companies invest in investments to see if there are changes in companies that require withdrawal. The European delegates to the general meeting could hardly imagine that this annual review gave the green light to investments in companies in the arms industry. Regarding ethical guidelines, Lemon referenced the General Conference Work Policy.

The General Conference administers funds and funds on behalf of districts, unions, divisions and institutions in the church. These are primarily units in North America. Approximately 60% of these funds are money in defined contribution plans. The owner of these funds is not the church community, but individuals, since contributions to the pension are made on their behalf. The remaining 40% money administered by the General Conference typically consists of asset funds, construction funds, and other district, union, division, and institutional funds. It is the general meetings and boards of these underlying entities that have the authority to decide whether money is to be managed in mutual funds and, if so, in which fund. The General Conference manages 19 different funds with slightly different risks.

General Conference Response

The Trans-European Division supports efforts to strengthen ethical investment guidelines and will follow up on this matter with the General Conference. The division's leadership is clear that they want stricter ethical frameworks for General Conference investments.

The Norwegian Union has tried to obtain as much information about this situation as possible, but recognizes that there may be pages of the General Conference's investment practices that we are not yet fully aware of.

The Norwegian Union only has very small amounts placed in securities shares.

In an email to the Chief Financial Officer of the General Conference, Victor Marley reminds us that European Adventists have always had a pacifist position and that it has been too difficult to represent a passive ethic. Shortly after this complaint by the DNU, the General Conference announced that it was going to review its investment practices, and they reference this news. However, they do it this way:

Although Victor Marley appears to have been moved by God to point out the sins of his church, the reality is that his message is more of the same: "No importa lo que pase ahí dentro, este sigue siendo el pueblo de Dios." It is very possible that Marley is only giving information that the church itself wants to publish—openly, therefore. the information is-forgive the redundancy, public. And let's not forget where Victor Marley's salary comes from, and who gave him that job. Can an employee rebel against his boss without receiving reprimand? And we have not seen any rebuke, for there is no rebellion here. This is just one more case of controlled opposition, "pero la serpiente era astuta…" (GEN. 3:1).

Although above the Adventist Church denied its intervention in the tobacco industry, junk food, gambling, pornography, and others, according to Timonthy Aka, the General Conference Fund Manager, we have found contradictory evidence.

In an article titled "Profane tithe", published by the magazine Adventist Record On March 10, 2017, the Adventist Church recognizes its intervention in these industries, in a very subtle way. Adventist Record is the official magazine of The South Pacific Division, based in Australia. Kent Kingston, author of the article, first leaves us with the following rhetorical question, addressed to your conscience:
